UK revs up visa work to let more Chinese go to Olympics

BRITAIN will accelerate its visa approval procedure for more Chinese to visit the London Olympic Games, its tourism official said in Shanghai today.

The approval procedure will be shortened to about 14 days from more than 20 days before, said Travis Qian, manager for China and Hong Kong market of the British Tourism Bureau.

British consulates in China have increased the number of visa officials and simplified some procedures to shorten the waiting time, he said.

A green channel will be opened for those having event tickets to London Olympic Games, he added.

"The Olympic Games from July 27 to August 12 will attract 20 percent more Chinese visitors to the UK than in last year," Qian said.

A total of 200,000 Chinese travelers visited the UK last year, according to the bureau.

Meanwhile, British Airways will offer discount fares for Shanghai-London flights starting tomorrow. A round-trip economy-class ticket will cost 2,600 yuan while a Beijing-London ticket will cost 3,900 yuan. Passengers can buy tickets at www.ba.com.
