UNESCO honor to aid Macau tourism

MACAU, which has been designated a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO, will cherish its new title and make good use of it to help transform the special administrative region into a world center of tourism and leisure, said its cultural chief official yesterday.

After UNESCO yesterday announced that Macau would join its Creative Cities Network, Tam Chon Weng, the city’s secretary for social affairs and culture, said he was very happy and confident that the UNESCO honor would open new horizons for Macau’s diversity, uniqueness and sustainability.

“Gastronomy has all along been a distinctive element of our culture of over 400 years of east-meets-west exchanges and we will devote our utmost efforts to bring our unique elements to contribute to the enrichment of the network,” Tam said.

Macau’s government will stage a series of activities to raise public awareness about the designation. It will also introduce several initiatives, including enhancing vocational training, organizing an annual international gastronomy forum, and participating in international exchange events organized by UNESCO Creative Cities. UNESCO said on Tuesday that it had selected four Chinese cities to join its Creative Cities Network.

Created in 2004, the network covers seven creative fields – Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Music, and Media Arts.

The four selected Chinese cities — Changsha (media arts), Macau (gastronomy), Qingdao (film) and Wuhan (design) — are among 64 cities from 44 countries and regions which join the network.

UNESCO said the four Chinese cities were picked for their efforts to “develop and exchange innovative best practices to promote creative industries, strengthen participation in cultural life and integrate culture into sustainable urban development policies.”

The United Nations body said that “within the framework of the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda, the Network provides a platform for cities to demonstrate culture’s role as an enabler for building sustainable cities.”
