US charity comes to aid of Taiwan dance group
Cloud Gate, a leading Asian dance group based in Taiwan, said yesterday it had received US$5 million from a US charitable foundation to help rebuild its headquarters which was destroyed in a fire.
The surprise donation completes the group’s efforts to raise NT$660 million (US$21.85 million), the amount needed to build the headquarters at Tamshui outside the island’s capital city Taipei.
The donation was made through The Alphawood Foundation, set up by US entrepreneur and philanthropist Fred Eychaner, president and CEO of Newsweb Corporation.
Cloud Gate, founded by choreographer Lin Hwai-min in 1973, suffered a severe setback in 2008 when its studio, sets, costumes and archives were destroyed in a fire.
But Lin pledged to build a new and more modern and spacious complex for the group and fund-raising started soon after the fire.
The new headquarters is scheduled to be inaugurated in 2015. It will include a performing arts center with a 400-seat fully equipped theater, an outdoor stage with seating for 2,000 people and two sizable rehearsal studios.
