US citizen fined for illegal GPS land survey
AN American citizen has been fined 20,000 yuan and had his GPS devices confiscated for illegally collecting geographic data in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The unidentified American was found collecting geographic data with two handheld GPS receivers without authorization near a military base in Manas County last August, China News Service reported yesterday.
The man claimed to start a tourist agency for foreigners to travel in Xinjiang. He had collected more than 90,000 GPS coordinates before his illegal activity was discovered, the report said.
The man was told to stop geographic surveying immediately and fined 20,000 yuan for conducting mapping without approval from government authorities, the Xinjiang Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation told China News Service.
His two handheld GPS receivers were also confiscated.
