US expands visa sections to meet demand of Chinese visitors

Chinese citizens are travelling to the United States in record numbers and the demand for the US visa is now growing 35 percent a year and will maintain such a rate for years to come, the US Embassy officials said today.

To cope with the rising demand, the US government is expanding its visa sections in consulates across the country and is also looking at the possibility of extending visa durations for Chinese nationals, said US Embassy Press Secretary Richard L. Buangan said in Beijing.

He said new consular facilities in Guangzhou and Shanghai will be added this year and about 50 new visa officers will be hired to accelerate visa processing. The new employees represent nearly a 50 percent staff increase in China

Buangan noted that Chinese travelers spend an average of US$6,000 in the US and the number of Chinese students is also rapidly increasing, making them the largest group of international students studying in the US. In the 2010-2011 academic year, nearly 160,000 students from China were enrolled in American schools, up 23 percent from the previous year.
