US returns seized fossils to China
BONES and prehistoric fossils were returned to China by the United States government yesterday.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sent the fossils to the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Washington.
They include bones of a saber-toothed tiger, the dinosaur Psittacosaurus lujiatunesis, and eggs of several other dinosaurs, ICE said on its official Website.
Those fossils had been shipped from China and were seized by CBP in Chicago and Virginia. The fossils were evaluated to be animal remains dating back as far as 100 million years. The 24 fossilized dinosaur eggs were estimated by experts to be about 60 million years old.
The initial investigation showed the dinosaur eggs came from Guangdong Province while the animal remains were from Zhaoyang City, Liaoning Province.
Deputy Chief of Mission Xie Feng of the Chinese Embassy expressed heartfelt gratitude to the US government for its efforts to return the fossils to China.
Officials said the Chinese Government will send experts to the US to escort the fossils back to China, where they will be placed in the Geological Museum of China and preserved for scientific research.
