US tourist saves woman from West Lake
A woman who jumped into the West Lake in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, to kill herself was saved by an American tourist yesterday.
The middle-aged woman jumped at about 4:40pm from the lakeside Wenshui Pavilion, said witness Liu Yong, a security guard of Xihu Tiandi, a venue of dining and shopping near the pavilion.
Liu was ready to help but before he took off his uniform, a foreign lady was already undressed and dived headlong into the water.
"When she jumped into the lake, the drowning woman was about 20 meters away from the pavilion and was sinking. I could only see her hair," Liu said.
"But the foreign lady swam quickly to her, held up her nape with one hand and used the other to stroke water. She was so professional and agile. It took her less than two minutes to swim back to the bank," he said.
Liu and another foreigner, a friend of the rescuer, pulled them from the water, and the suicide woman coughed a lot but was in good condition.
"The foreign lady put on her clothes after drying herself with some tissue and left with her friend after seeing the drowning woman was all right," Liu recalled.
According to a local newspaper, Today Morning Express, the rescuer is an American in her 30s and she was sightseeing around the West Lake when the incident happened. She didn't leave her name or contact information.
The saved woman surnamed Xia was sent to a police station. She was from Fuyang, a satellite city of Hangzhou. She wanted to commit suicide due to difficulties in her life. She was brought home later by her relatives.
