US will no longer add pages to passports
The US government will no longer add additional pages to US passports starting on January 1, 2016, the US Embassy in Beijing said on Tuesday.
Instead, 52-page passport books will be issued at no extra cost, according to the new policy.
This worldwide change was made to enhance the security of US passports.
“The ePassport integrates the latest concepts in electronic document protection. One of these measures preventing unauthorized reading of ePassports is adding RF blocking material to the ePassport cover. Adding visa page inserts diminishes the effect of this blocking material,” the embassy said.
US citizens were advised to renew their passports early to make sure they have enough blank pages for visa stamps from other countries once the change goes into effect.
Those who require extra pages in their passports should make an appointment to visit the US Embassy and consulates around China before December 31.
