US$70,300 for families of 5 drowned children

FAMILIES of five drowned children have signed a compensation agreement with the contractor of the fish pond where the bodies were found.

The contractor promised to pay a total of 480,000 yuan (US$70,300) to the two families, according to the government of Tiantai County in eastern China's Zhejiang Province.

The victims' fathers were brothers.

Investigations showed the drownings had been an accident, but the sturgeon company was found partly responsible for the tragedy due to inadequate management.

The contractor of the 2.4-meter-deep pond failed to cordon off the paths leading to the area, allowing easy access, said Wang Xiejiao, political commissar of the public security bureau of Tiantai.

Villagers also said there were no warning signs around the pond to remind people of dangers.

The bodies of the five victims, three girls and two boys, aged 7 to 13 were recovered on Tuesday from the pond of Sanhe Sturgeon Development Co, about 500 meters away from their families lived.

They had been reported missing on February 18.

Signs of the children slipping into the water and trying to rescue each other were found on a slope at the northwestern corner of the pond.

There was no evidence of strangulation or other external forces found on their bodies, said police.

Also not found was any evidence of toxins or other clues that would indicate foul play, investigations confirmed.
