Unclaimed 16 million yuan jackpot given to charity
A lottery prize of nearly 16.19 million yuan (US$2.52 million) will be donated to charity after its winner failed to claim the prize, lottery officials said yesterday.
Jiangsu Province Sports Lottery Center announced that the prize money will be given to a charity fund as it remained unclaimed 60 days after the winning numbers were drawn on May 30, Yangtze Evening News reported today.
This is the biggest unclaimed jackpot in China so far. Two years ago, a 9.22-million-yuan prize also went expired after it sat unclaimed for 60 days.
The winning ticket was sold in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province. Workers at the Jiangsu Province Sports Lottery Center said they received several phone calls from people claiming to be the winner but failed to provide correct identity.
