‘Uncle House’ sentenced to 11 1/2 years in jail

A SENIOR police officer nicknamed “Uncle House” for his large property holdings was sentenced to 11 and a half years in jail yesterday.

Haizhu District People’s Court in the southern city of Guangzhou convicted Cai Bin, a former deputy director of the police bureau of Guangzhou’s Panyu District, of accepting bribes totaling 2.75 million yuan (US$446,000) from 1993 to 2012.

Most of the money was seized and properties worth 600,000 yuan were confiscated.

Cai was dismissed from his post in October 2012 after bloggers brought his corruption case to light on the Internet, claiming he had more than 20 houses.

Cai stood trial in July.

Ordinary Chinese have increasingly turned to social media to expose government corruption, ending a number of officials’ careers.
