Underground link to connect two Beijing rail terminals

TWO Beijing railway stations will be connected by underground rail links in 2012 to make transit between them easier.

The project linking Beijing West Railway Station and Beijing Railway Station is scheduled to open by the end of 2012, according to today's Legal Evening News.

The underground link will be 9.15 kilometers long with 7.3 kilometers of tunnels.

Beijing Railway Station will be a stop on the Shanghai-Beijing express railway that will run from Shanghai's Hongqiao traffic hub to Beijing South Railway Station.

The 1,318-kilometer Shanghai-Beijing express railway is expected to become the primary rail artery between the capital and Shanghai, featuring speeds of 350 kilometers per hour. A trip between Shanghai and Beijing will take only about five hours on the future link.

The project's first phase is scheduled to open next year.
