Unhygienic quilts seized at new TCM uni

QUILTS peddled at the new campus of Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were found to contain shoddy cotton that may cause disease, officials said after a raid yesterday.

Officials from the Henan Fiber Inspection Bureau in central China have seized all the quilts and will punish the guilty sellers once their investigation is complete, Dahe Daily reported.

Almost half of the stalls sold quilts made from a combination of small cotton scraps and thrum – warp threads left on a loom once the cloth has been removed.

"These cheap cotton materials were collected from hospitals and funeral homes," an official worker said. "They are always sold to freshmen or small hostels."

Shoddy cotton, with unpleasant smells, may contain germs, dust and toxic chemicals, which could lead to skin and respiratory diseases.

Some students however took the risk to buy these cheap quilts. A parent said: "Many students come from villages. They prefer cheap goods." Normally, a quilt is priced at only 60 yuan (US$9.402).
