Uni student kills friend

A STUDENT from a Beijing university surrendered to police on Saturday morning for killing her classmate at a hostel.
Duan Xiaoyu, a sophomore at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, told police that she killed her classmate Zhao Qiurui at midnight at a 7Days Inn hostel opposite the China Agricultural University's east campus, not far from USTB, Beijing Times reported yesterday.
Duan surrendered to police at 7:12am, USTB said on its Website on Saturday.
The two were close friends who didn't have boyfriends, the newspaper quoted their schoolmates as saying.
They always stayed together and often went to the canteen or class side by side, said an anonymous source.
Duan is from Beijing's Haidian District, very open-minded and a little bit tomboy, according to the source.
Duan was good at computing and helped friends with their computing problems.
Zhao was from central China's Hubei Province and had shocked her classmates by dying her hair white and getting a lip piercing when she was a freshman, said the source.
"Duan seemed to have an inclination for self-abuse as once I saw her slash her left elbow several times," the source added.
Zhao and Duan were also elected department heads at the university's environmental protection association last October and picked garbage from dormitory rooms every week, said one of their schoolmates who declined to be named.
The school is offering counselling for Duan and Zhao's classmates, the report said.
