Uni student to seek legal advice after expulsion
A Chinese student who was expelled from the University of Iowa in the United States seemingly for making a threatening social media post is seeking legal advice, Qianjiang Evening News reported yesterday, citing the man’s father.
“My son told me he was repatriated from the US. He is now seeking legal help,” the father of 22-year-old Ni Hanxiang was quoted as saying.
The controversy began after Ni said in a post on the social media site Instagram that he would “let [his] professors experience the fear of Lu Gang” if he did not do well in his classes.
Lu was a Chinese graduate student at the university who in 1991 went on a shooting spree at the campus, killing five people before turning the gun on himself.
Ni later summarized the events surrounding his departure from Iowa in a separate post on the Chinese social media site Weibo in which he said his comments were not meant to be taken seriously.
According to the website of the The Daily Iowan, the university confirmed it had investigated a social media threat, but would not say if it was related to Ni or his expulsion.
The website also said that Ni had a firearms permit and posted a photograph of the student holding a shotgun.
Another Iowa-based newspaper, Press-Citizen, reported that Ni’s student visa had been invalidated and his firearms permit revoked as a result of being expelled from university.
The Qianjiang Evening News report said Ni returned to his home city of Hangzhou, capital of east China’s Zhejiang Province.
“My son was doing well in the US ... he had been granted a scholarship (and) bore no ill will,” his father was quoted as saying.
The report said that the father was refusing to allow his son to speak to the media.
