Uni students detained for spreading earthquake rumor
TWO university students have been detained in southern China's Foshan City for spreading an earthquake rumor almost identical to one doing the rounds in northern China a week ago.
The rumor, citing the United States Earthquake Bureau and US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration, said there would be a magnitudes-7-8 earthquake in the city's Sanshui District on June 13.
Some residents were scared, but the rumor did not create too much disturbance because it was so similar to the story spread a week ago.
The only difference was that the epicenter had moved from Shaanxi Province to Guangdong Province.
Foshan authorities started dispelling the rumor on Saturday, via local Internet forums and short messages.
Most Netizens said they had seen too many such rumors and were not really panicked by it.
A Foshan Earthquake Bureau official said there are several minor earthquakes in Foshan every day as it was in an active seismic region, though most people do not feel them, the local Nanfang Daily reported today.
He said residents and buildings in the city were well prepared for an earthquake and that's why the rumor did not scare people too much.
There was even a northeast-China version of the same rumor, which "predicted" the earthquake would happen in Liaoning Province on June 13. Liaoning authorities clarified soon after the rumor started spreading.
Similar earthquake rumors sent thousands of people out of their homes in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region last week. They waited the whole night in public squares in the snow but no earthquake came.
