Universities' rolls fall
CHINESE universities are set to face financial pressures or even a struggle to survive this decade as student numbers continue to fall.
This is mainly due to a decline in the country's birthrate since the 1990s, according to a survey by the China Education Online under the Ministry of Education.
It forecast the downward trend in enrollments may last until the end of the decade, reducing revenues for many tertiary education providers heavily reliant on tuition fees.
The number of candidates for the annual nationwide college-entrance exam, or gaokao, had dropped by nearly 2 million by 2010 from a peak of 10.5 million in 2008.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China's birthrate was 12 per thousand during the past decade, while the figure was over 21 per thousand in 1990.
China's latest census, conducted last November, showed that juniors aged below 14 made up 16.6 of the mainland's population, 6.29 percentage lower than in the 2000 census.
