Universities sign co-op agreement
AUSTRALIA’S University of Tasmania said yesterday it has signed a deal with the University of Western Australia and Chongqing-based Southwest University to launch Westa College.
The deal will see the construction of a campus in Chongqing for Australian and Chinese students, which will open in September.
Students following four-year courses will spend the first two years in China before transferring to either Perth or Tasmania for the second half of their studies. On successful completion, they will be awarded a joint bachelor’s degree from the Chinese university and one of the Australian colleges.
The Tasmanian university, which said it expects to attract an extra 80 students under the scheme, is also discussing a deal to provide a marine biology master’s program with Shandong University.
Two of its academics — Professor Peter Rathjen, its vice chancellor, and Dr Joy Rathjen — are also planning to give a lecture on stem cell research at Beijing’s University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it said.
