University demands apology in sex case
Peking University demanded a former professor apologize for writing online that his ex-colleagues sexually harassed restaurant hostesses frequently, a court heard yesterday in Beijing.
In August 2012, Zhou Hengfu, a former professor of economics at the school, claimed on his Weibo microblog that some deans and directors at the university sexually harassed beautiful hostesses at Mengtaoyuan Restaurant.
Zhou, who denied the charges, never provided evidence to support his allegations. The posts were retweeted more than 60,000 times and received over 17,000 comments in three days.
Zhou later admitted to “exaggerating” and said only a handful of faculty behaved indecently.
The university told Haidian District Intermediate People’s Court that Zhou’s actions had severely damaged its reputation and asked Zhou to delete all defamatory wording on his microblog.
It also asked Zhou to publish a public apology on his microblog, four portal websites and in seven major newspapers, as well as pay all court costs for the case.
Mengtaoyuan Restaurant said Zhou’s posts had negatively impacted its business. It asked for 2,300 yuan (US$370.96) in compensation and a public apology.
The court did not announce a verdict in the case yesterday.
