University official charged over bribes


A SENIOR official with a prestigious central China university has been charged for allegedly taking 610,000 yuan (US$90,023) in bribes.

Prosecutors have referred the case of Long Xiaole, former vice Party chief of Wuhan University, to Jinzhou City Intermediate People's Court, Hubei Province, today's Changjiang Times newspaper reported.

The university's former vice principle Chen Zhaofang will soon be charged with corruption too, the newspaper said.

Long, 62, took cash on 11 occasions from real estate developers and contractors during August 2000 to November 2003 when he was in charge of the school's logistics and infrastructure construction, according to the prosecutors.

He allegedly took 410,000 yuan from Ba Nengjun, former president of Wuhan Hongbo Group Co Ltd, when the group built a student dormitory for the university.

He also took another 200,000 yuan from a project manager surnamed Chen with Zhongtian Construction Group Co Ltd's Wuhan branch when the group was building an infrastructure project for the school.
