University official saves girl who jumps off dorm
A university official saved a suicidal student by catching her after she jumped from a balcony of a five-floor dormitory building in Nanjing, the capital of eastern China's Jiangsu Province.
Zhang Wei, 49, director of the student work department at Nanjing Institute of Mechatronic Technology, rushed to catch the freshman to prevent her hitting the ground. The impact fractured both of Zhang's arms and her nose while the girl just suffered some soft-tissue injuries.
Zhang left the hospital while the girl, whose name was not disclosed, was receiving psychological counseling at Chinese Traditional Medicine Hospital in Nanjing, the Yangtze Evening News reported.
The incident occurred about 2pm on Wednesday. The girl was sitting at the edge of the balcony while many university professors and students tried to persuade her not to jump, the report said.
"Do not jump on impulse. You can vent your anger and spill out your story to me," Zhang shouted after she was called to the scene.
But the girl ignored her words and crashed into Zhang's arms as both fell to the ground, the report said.
