University officials on graft charges

TWO senior officials at a university in Hubei Province have been arrested on corruption charges.
Chen Zhaofang, vice principal of Wuhan University, was arrested on September 3 and Long Xiaole, the school's vice Party secretary, was arrested 10 days later, the Shanghai-based Xinmin.cn reported yesterday.
The arrests came after several months' investigation into allegations that they accepted more than "several million yuan in bribes over the university's major infrastructure construction projects," the Website said.
They were also alleged to have been involved in corruption cases concerning the school's Donghu campus, a 1 billion yuan (US$146.49 million) joint project between the university and two private enterprises.
Chen, 59, the university's vice principal since 1994, is in charge of the school's finance and logistics. Long, 61, has been the university's vice Party secretary since 2005.
