Uprooted farmers threaten suicide over land dispute
AUTHORITIES in the eastern Zhejiang Province are investigating a demolition dispute in which 16 farmers vowed to commit suicide if the government did not return their farmland. The incidence has triggered a public outrage via the Internet.
A total of 20,000 hectares of farmland which used to grow potatoes and taroes has been leveled for the construction of a large residential complex, a court, a school and several factories in Ninghai County.
The affected peasants, who had tilled the land all their lives and planned to pass it to their offspring, said their livelihood had been destroyed by bulldozers in November last year, reported China Youth Daily today.
One of them, Hu Aiguo, told reporters that they were offered 20,000 yuan (US$3,013) for each mu (15 mu = one hectare) in compensation, but the sum was unable to cover their long-term losses. The price was also much lower than that the village committee promised some families who were close to its officials.
Even without the farmers' agreement and the approval of the county's land and resources bureau, the construction was started according to the official schedule.
