Urban development official gets life sentence

A FORMER urban development official in Changchun, Jilin Province, and president of a construction company, one of the Top 500 enterprises in China, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for taking 12 million yuan (US$1.8 million) in bribes and embezzling more than 140,000 yuan.

Tan Li, 57, was deputy director of urban construction and development bureau in Changchun and also chairman of Changchun Construction Engineering Group. He received the verdict from the Baicheng City Intermediate People's Court, China News Service reported today.

During his office from 1997 to 2008, Tan accepted nine houses and cash from real estate developers, contractors and decoration companies. All of the bribes have been confiscated.

In returns for bribes, Tan abused his position to help them win contracts and get land-use permits.
