Urban management officer sacked over vendor's injury
AN urban management squad leader in Chongqing, southwest China has been sacked after his squad caused a fruit vendor to roll down the steps of an overpass and got a bleeding face as she tried to flee their law enforcement.
Yuzhong District authorities said today other squad members had also been suspended for their nonchalance and no reaction as the 48-year-old Du Xianju lied on the ground with blood on her face, hands and legs.
A witness snapped photos of the wounded woman and posted them online, which soon attracted wide condemnation of those officers.
But the authorities confirmed that no violence was used in the act of law enforcement. The woman vendor was pulling her basket from the hands of an officer when the man suddenly let it go, causing Du to fall down the steps, they said.
The authorities said they had covered Du's medical bills of about 5,000 yuan (US$ 772.25) and she was still hospitalized for head injury.
