Urban planner and mistress sentenced for bribery
THE former urban planner of Chongqing Municipality has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking 18 million yuan (US$2.63 million) in bribes.
The Chongqing No.1 Intermediate People's Court found Jiang Yong, 47, the former director of Chongqing's urban planning bureau guilty today. Jiang's mistress, Tang Wei, who was also charged, faces 15 years behind bars.
The reprieve means Jian's sentence could be commuted to life imprisonment if he exhibits good behavior during the period.
Both Jian and his mistress are entitled to appeal within 10 days of receiving the judgment.
The court heard the case on February 23. Prosecutors charged Jiang with seeking illegal profits for 16 developers or individuals involved in relocation, adjusting project bidding and planning by using his position and taking by himself or with Tang a total of 18.7 million yuan on 46 occasions over five years.

Developers and individuals who offered bribes to Jiang and Tang included Chongqing ChangAn Real Estate Development Co Ltd, China State Construction Engineering Corporation Chongqing branch, and Yang Chuanquan, chairman of Chongqing International Golf Club Co Ltd.
