Vaccines switched to pass tests, court is told
Chinese vaccine makers regularly cheat quality watchdogs by switching the samples they send for examination, a manager with China's fourth largest rabies vaccine maker said in a court proceeding.
Six managers with Jiangsu-based Ealong Biotech Co stood trial in Tianning District People's Court in Changzhou City of Jiangsu Province on Monday, accused of selling 22,226 fake rabies vaccines in 27 provinces. Their confessions in court exposed the dark side of the industry, China Youth Daily reported yesterday.
"Switching the sample for tests is a routine act among Chinese vaccine makers. Nobody instructed us to do so," said Zhang Zhongyi, of Ealong.
Jiangsu Ealong was accused in December of producing substandard rabies vaccines after several batches of its products revealed quality defects, the report said.
The company's rabies vaccines were found to contain only 0.6 International Unit of effective medicine, way below the national standard of 2.5 International Unit.
The company's representatives pleaded not guilty. A Ealong quality manager Jia Xiaoxia said the company was never given a chance to clear its name by retesting the samples as the accusation was made two months after the batch's expiration date. She said the vaccines could have gone bad during transportation.
A manager Chen Dagao said he signed and agreed to sell the batch of vaccines only because he saw a Quality Pass of the drug. The pass was a fake, the court heard.
