Vanke rings in changes, dumps 鈥榖oss鈥

China Vanke, the country鈥檚 largest property developer by market value, has banned the custom of calling superiors 鈥渂oss,鈥 according to an internal notice from its Shanghai branch, which was posted online.
The move, approved by the general manager of the firm鈥檚 Shanghai branch, Sun Jia, aims to strengthen partnership, cooperation, and shared responsibility, the notice said.
Under the new rule, employees can no longer call their superiors 鈥渮ong,鈥 the Chinese term for leadership titles. Those who break the rule will be fined 100 yuan (US$16). The notice has suggested that employees use given names or nicknames, as long as they are suitable for the workplace.
It shows the company is adjusting its management structure, Daily Economic News quoted real estate expert Xue Jianxiong as saying.
鈥淚t鈥檚 not easy for the company to transform from a bureaucracy to partnership. Such a move shows Shanghai Vanke is determined to cut through red tape and boost inner vitality,鈥 Xue said.
Traditionally, Chinese people use appellations to show respect to their elders and superiors. This was replaced by the use of 鈥渃omrade鈥 in 1965.
However, as China developed rapidly, the title 鈥渂oss鈥 became more popular than 鈥渃omrade,鈥 even within Communist Party organizations.
Vanke鈥檚 notice follows similar moves in east China鈥檚 Jiangxi Province, where Party members in May were told not to call their superiors 鈥渂oss鈥 or 鈥渉ead.鈥
Last year, the provincial Party committee of Guangdong in south China banned vulgar appellations such as 鈥渂ro.鈥
On social media, opinion was mixed. One person said on Weibo that Vanke鈥檚 goodwill might not work, while another argued the ban was 鈥渁 step toward becoming better.鈥
Another user said she hoping for similar changes at her 鈥渉ierarchical company.鈥
