Vehicles, pedestrians fall into river after bridge collapses in Sichuan
A bridge in Jiangyou City, Sichuan Province, collapsed about 11:50am today and the casualties remain unknown.
Several cars and pedestrians were seen falling into the river during the collapse while search and rescue work is still under way, the provincial news portal website reported.
So far, two people have been rescued by local residents, while the exact number of people who had fallen into the river and the casualties are not immediately known.
The bridge is an overpass on the Mianyang Highway.
It's reported that the collapse is likely triggered by flooding caused by heavy rains which had lasted for two days in the region. Water level in the river has risen significantly over the past two days.
The old Qingnian Bridge is decades old and was opened for temporary service at time of the accident as the new Qingnian Bridge is currently being renovated.
Rainstorm-triggered floods have also affected about 16,900 people in Ya'an City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, which was shaken by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in April, local authorities said today.
