Venal ex-vice mayor gets suspended death penalty
FORMER vice mayor of Bayan Nur City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was handed a suspended death sentence yesterday for accepting bribes worth more than 16 million yuan, Xinhua news agency reported.
Li Shigui received 15.36 million yuan (US$2.46 million), US$10,000, as well as 2,000 grams of gold valued at 616,000 yuan in bribes from construction contractors and real estate developers between 2005 and 2011, the Intermediate People's Court of Baotou City said.
He was detained by prosecutors for investigation in March.
The two-year reprieve means Li's sentence will be commuted to life in prison if he behaves well during that period. The court also ordered the confiscation of his assets.
He confessed most of the crimes during the investigation, the court said. Li said he would not appeal the verdict.
