Vendor jailed for at least 20 years

A STREET vendor has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in Jiangsu Province for fatally stabbing an urban management officer, the Procuratorial Daily reported yesterday.

The court also ruled that he serve at least 20 years in prison after the reprieve.

Hou Qinzhi, a 23-year-old Shandong Province native, killed Liu Xiaobing in Nantong City after he had been caught selling fruit without a license last August.

The Nantong Intermediate People's Court heard that Hou had asked for his electronic weighing machine back after Liu had confiscated it.

He pulled out a knife to threaten Liu and during the struggle stabbed him in the stomach and the heart.

The court said Hou received a two-year reprieve because he had behaved well after being caught but the brutally of the attack merited a long prison sentence.

Hou was ordered to pay the victim's family 505,000 yuan (US$78,053) compensation.
