Vice mayor detained after missing for two months
POLICE in central China's Henan Province have detained a city vice mayor who disappeared in late July, allegedly with two other people, local authorities said today.
Guo Yipin, 52, vice mayor of Luoyang City, was caught by Luoyang police in Changsha City, central China's Hunan Province, according to the local government. The case will be handed over to the People's Procuratorate in Henan's capital city of Zhengzhou.
Police did not reveal the exact reason why he was detained.
Guo was elected vice mayor of Luoyang in February. He was in charge of the city's work safety, coal mining, environmental protection and transportation.
The vice mayor went missing after asking for a leave on the ground that his mother became ill.
A search document posted on the Internet in mid-September said police were searching any possible hideouts of Guo and two others -- one a local real estate developer -- such as houses, yards and disused workshops.
Guo was leading a team to tackle illegal tricycles in the city and demanded a meeting each day during the campaign. Since late July he has not been seen or heard of by other leading officials and the daily meeting he presided over has halted.
