Victim beheaded in knife rampage

A MAN beheaded a vegetable seller and injured two others in a knife-wielding rampage through a town center in southern China on Sunday, the day after his wedding.

Police caught the suspect, Wu Haiping, 29, at a telephone store in Lingshan Town of Haikou City, capital of Hainan Province, after he was cornered by villagers.

Wu allegedly cut off the woman's head, left arm and part of the right arm and sliced another woman's hands and a man's throat, the Hainan Special Zone News reported yesterday.

The dead woman was identified as Chen Lai'er, around 40, a Lingshan native. She is survived by her husband, parents, two daughters and a son. Selling vegetables was the family's major income source.

Both of the injured were out of danger, according to doctors at Lingshan's clinic, where they were treated.

Newlywed Wu, also native of Lingshan, was seen running into the crowded town center on Sunday with kitchen knives in his hands, chopping everything and anyone he happened to see, villagers told the newspaper.

"He was crazy and chopped people like vegetables," said a witness surnamed Zhou.

A woman surnamed Ke was the last person Wu attacked before Chen fell, witnesses said.

"I was carrying an umbrella, and Wu jumped at me and chopped it into pieces," Ke said.

"When he was about to attack me, he happened to see a vegetable vendor (Chen) passing by and turned around to attack her," Ke said.

Chen fell to the ground after the initial assault, and Wu continued to slash at her, Ke said.

Villagers called police and chased Wu, cornering him in a telecom outlet. Wu threw Chen's head into a chair and began another round of chopping -- hacking up computers, counters and furniture, a worker surnamed Wang told the newspaper.

Wu was finally caught by police and villagers.
