IN a unique case of instance justice, a 26-year-old victim of a gang of robbers helped Xi'an police bust the ring by pretending to join the criminals and then providing the details of their hideout to law enforcement authorities, Xi'an Evening News reported today.

The man, nicknamed Xiao Li, from Yulin City was robbed by four men while on his way to visit his girlfriend in suburban Xi'an in northwest China's Shaanxi Province on the evening of June 22. Xiao Li begged them to return his identity card, lying that he was jobless and poor. One of robbers invited Xiao Li to join the gang, and the latter agreed just to get back his card.

The robbers took Xiao Li to their hideout on Tumen street in Lianhu District of Xi'an. Xiao Li managed to escape when one of the robbers left behind to keep a watch over him fell asleep. He promptly informed the police about the den's location, helping them nab eight criminals.

The criminals had committed over 20 robberies and gained over 50,000 yuan (US$8,064.52) in ill-gotten wealth, said police.
