Victim of plague was infected by marmot
A MAN who died of plague in northwest China’s Gansu Province on Wednesday contracted the disease through eating marmot — a type of ground squirrel, it was reported yesterday.
The case was confirmed in Yumen City, under the jurisdiction of Jiuquan City, the Jiuquan government said on Thursday. Gansu issued an emergency alert in Jiuquan the same day, with some roads to the area closed.
A member of staff from the Yumen Center for Disease Control and Prevention told thepaper.cn that the 38-year-old victim, surnamed Wang, became infected with highly contagious pneumonic plague after eating the mountain-dwelling rodent.
A total of 151 people who had close contact with Wang have been put in quarantine and are under medical observation. None have reported symptoms of the disease, according to the local government.
The National Health and Family Planning Commission has sent disease prevention and control specialists to Yumen to prevent the plague from spreading.
Officials also said anyone who has fever or a cough or has been to the Yumen City No.1 People’s Hospital where Wang died since Tuesday must come forward for a heath check.
Pneumonic plague is a very aggressive infection and antibiotics must be given within 24 hours of first symptoms.
