Victim's family sue police

A FAMILY went to court yesterday to sue police in a southwest China county for naming an innocent man as a suspect in an explosion that killed him.

Zhao Dengyong's relatives are seeking an apology from the public security office of Qiaojia County, Yunnan Province, and compensation of 2 million yuan (US$314,961), the family's lawyer, Lan He, said.

Police named Zhao, 26, as a suspected suicide bomber in a May 10 bombing that killed him, three others and injured 16 people in Qiaojia. However, police later found Zhao had no idea about the conspiracy but was cheated by the culprits.

Police officials in Zhaotong City, which has jurisdiction over Qiaojia, said the misjudgment was made before police had carefully investigated the case and it had caused a negative impact on Zhao's family.
