Video-sharing site boss detained over porn
THE head of video-sharing website QVOD has been detained for allegedly spreading pornography.
QVOD general manager Wang Xin was detained on August 7 while trying to enter an unnamed country and returned to China the following day, the Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
This came after Chinese judicial authorities issued a Red Notice through Interpol for Wang, who left China three months ago.
Wang confessed to having made profit from pornographic videos stored on the company’s servers, despite being aware that this is against the law, a statement from the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications said yesterday.
He is the main suspect in an investigation into QVOD Technology Co Ltd, which was found to have spread pornographic content in May, added the statement.
QVOD, which was founded in 2007 and is based in the southern city of Shenzhen, had offered pirated and pornographic videos through peer-to-peer streaming.
Its user base quickly grew to 300 million.
In April, Beijing police opened an investigation into the company for spreading pornography online.
Several other suspects have also been detained.
The case is still under investigation, the statement added.
QVOD was also accused of copyright infringement. In June, it was fined 260 million yuan (US$41.8 million) and its value-added telecom service license revoked.
Under China’s criminal law the highest penalty for making profit from spreading or publishing pornographic content is life imprisonment plus penalties.
Earlier this month, China’s search engine giant Baidu was told to clean up improper content after accounts on its cloud storage service were found to contain pornographic files.
