Vietnamese brides pull sudden disappearing act
POLICE in Jiangxi Province are investigating the disappearance of 20 Vietnamese brides who married Chinese men in China a month ago.
About 20 Vietnamese new brides in Lichuan County disappeared one day late last month, Xinhua reported yesterday.
The first villager, surnamed Wang, who married a Vietnamese wife said he was introduced to Vietnamese woman Ruan Xiaofang on March 4. They got married soon after Wang agreed to give Ruan's family 33,000 yuan (US$4,830) as a betrothal gift.
After a simple ceremony, Wang and Ruan started their life as any normal couple. But Wang soon found that his wife was a warmhearted matchmaker.
Ruan introduced about 20 Vietnamese women to Wang's bachelor friends. The beautiful and gentle Vietnamese women struck a chord among these single men. Ruan's matchmaking was a success almost every time.
Wang said he was aware that some foreign brides would run away after getting betrothal gifts. But he trusted Ruan after watching her for a month.
But on a matchmaking trip this April, Ruan left dinner early to buy something and never returned.
After returning home that night, Wang learned that all the other Vietnamese brides had also disappeared.
Jiangxi Police said the women were illegal immigrants who married local farmers to cheat them out of betrothal gifts.
