Village blast kills 4 and wounds 38 in Sichuan

FOUR people were confirmed dead and 38 others were hospitalized yesterday when a village house exploded in Junlian County in southwestern Sichuan Province.
The blast which occurred around 7:50pm was caused by flammables stored in the house, local officials said.
The wounded villagers were sent immediately to a local hospital for treatment. Four of them were in critical condition, the China News Service reported today.
Witnesses said they heard three loud explosions and some neighboring houses were also damaged.
About 200 policemen, firefighters and medics rushed to the scene to rescue victims, the report said.
Police are still investigating the cause of the explosion.
