Village chief gets life for slashing town officials

A village official in Chengde, northern Hebei Province was sentenced to life in prison yesterday for stabbing two township officials and burning down their office over a financial dispute.
The convict, Gao Jinghe, was also ordered to pay 449,000 yuan (US$ 71256) in compensation for damaging the township office, the Beijing News reported today.
Gao said he would not appeal but his family considered his punishment was too heavy.
Gao who was the head of Beitai Village Committee was infuriated when the township officials refused to refund the village for the amount of money spent to buy cement for village construction.
He slashed the two officials with a knife and burnt down their office afterwards. Many official files and 46,000 yuan of banknotes were destroyed in the fire.
