Village fight: 42 on trial
SOME 42 people will face trial for allegedly descending on a mining village and launching an attack that left four villagers dead and more than 10 injured, police have announced.
They were allegedly hired by Sanxing Coal Coke Mining Co in the northern Shanxi Province. The attack came after a court ordered the company to return the mine's ownership to residents.
Li Baoming, head of security at Sanxing, allegedly called on more than 100 thugs armed with knives, spades and axes to attack the villagers in Baijiamao Village, Xiaoyi County on October 12, last year.
In was not the first incident in a dispute between the company and residents since the mine had been contracted to Sanxing for 10,000 yuan a year since 2002. Tensions rose after residents claimed the mine's operations caused pollution. When they filed a lawsuit in 2008, residents discovered that ownership of the mine had been illegally and secretly transferred to the company in 2002.
A court in Taiyuan City, capital of Shanxi Province, ruled that the company should return ownership to villagers in June 2008, prompting an appeal from Sanxing.
Then last year hitmen in eight cars and trucks rushed to village and embarked on a two-hour attack. Order was finally restored when more than 100 police arrived.
A higher court rejected the company's appeal and upheld the original ruling.
