Village official held after stabbing, arson attack

A VILLAGE official in northern Hebei Province has been detained for allegedly setting fire to the town government building and stabbing two township officials over accounting disputes.

Gao Jinghe, the director of the Beitai Village Commission, broke into the office of Tang Wenfu, the head of Liuzhangzi Town, poured petrol around the room and stabbed him with a knife on Sunday afternoon, Chengde County Public Security Bureau said.

The 57-year-old man then kicked off the door to the next office where he slashed Wang Jun, the Party chief of the town, with a knife.

Gao was apprehended before he left the government building. Tang was badly injured while Wang was in a stable condition, police officials said.

The 500-square-meter government building eventually burned to the ground, Beijing News reported today.

Gao allegedly became infuriated after township officials refused to refund expenses which he claimed to have spent on cement for village construction, the paper said.

Before he was elected as the village official three years ago, Gao was a butcher, stubborn and easily agitated, local villagers told the police.

The investigation is still ongoing.
