Village urges execution

FAMILIES are requesting that the death penalty be given to a man who was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy and causing his death in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

The boy's father said his son, Hui Hui, will never rest in peace unless the suspect, Xu Tongluo, is executed, reported Qilu Evening News.

The family led nearly 1,000 villagers, some of whom believed Xu was also involved in another eight child rapes in the village, to petition for Xu's death last November, because he might face merely up to five years in jail.

Villagers said jail terms were too lenient for "an evil man like Xu," the newspaper reported.

Xu told police in Tongguan County that he lured Hui to a small cave and forced him to take sleeping pills, and then raped Hui repeatedly. Xu said he left Hui alone and denied any connection with the child's death.

The boy was found lying on farm land, covered with his thin school uniform after a night-long search, said his father. An autopsy showed he had frozen to death, which was sped up by the medicine he had been given.

Many locals claimed Xu had also raped other boys and girls, though some hesitated to speak out. A boy's father said his son, Huan Huan, was tempted by Xu to an abandoned kiln last November. Xu was said to have tied the boy up, fed him three sleeping pills and raped him.

When Huan's father reported the incident to police, they said they could not investigate due to lack of evidence.
