Villager arrested for poaching giant panda 17 years ago

A villager in Yangxian County, northwestern Shaanxi Province has been indicted for poaching and skinning a giant panda 17 years ago, local media said today.

Zhang Chengwa was charged with hunting protected wild animals and may face a prison sentence of at least eight years, today's China Business News cited local prosecutors as saying.

Zhang was one of the four villagers who committed the crime after hearing that someone wanted to buy a piece of panda skin for 300,000 yuan (US$48,000), the paper said.

In February 1995 He Zhengqiang gunned down a giant panda in a local mountain and Yuan Jinguang who was sick at that time told his brother-in-law Zhang Chengwa to help He peel the skin from the killed panda.

Yuan then gave the skin to Gao Jianyun who had the buyer's contact. But their poaching was reported to police by other villagers and three were arrested immediately, except Zhang who went into hiding in other places.

Zhang was caught recently, prosecutors said. The other three had all been severely punished. Gao was sentenced to death with a reprieve; He and Yuan served more than eight years in jail.
