Villager burns self over seizure of his leased land
A 65-year-old man in China's eastern Shandong Province set himself on fire last Wednesday to protest against his village committee's decision to seize his land, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
Guo Jikuan, a villager in Zaozhuang City, suffered a third-degree burn and is still listed in critical condition, a doctor said.
Guo's son-in-law surnamed Xu told the paper that Guo burned himself because of a land dispute with the Zhaizi Village Committee.
He said Guo signed a contract with the village committee in 2004 to rent a piece of land for 30 years. Later Guo built a factory on the land with a lot of investment.
Last year the village committee suddenly decided to take back the land and sued Guo to the court, Xu said.
An unnamed source with the Zaozhuang City government said some court workers went to Guo's factory on December 7 to assess the value of its properties at the request of the village committee.
A fierce argument started between the two parties. Guo became so agitated that he climbed to the roof of the factory building and set himself ablaze with gasoline.
About 30 seconds later, Guo jumped down to the ground and many people helped him put out the fire with earth and sand.
Local authorities covered all the medical expenses of Guo and launched an investigation into the incident, the report said.
