Villager charged over 1995 panda poaching

A VILLAGER in the northwestern Shaanxi Province has been charged with poaching and skinning a giant panda 17 years ago, local media reported yesterday.

Zhang Chengwa from Yangxian County is accused of hunting a protected species.

If convicted, he faces a prison sentence of at least eight years, local prosecutors told China Business News.

Zhang is said to be one of four villagers who killed the panda after hearing that a buyer was prepared to pay 300,000 yuan (US$48,000) for a panda pelt, the paper said.

In February 1995, He Zhengqiang shot a giant panda in a local mountain. Accomplice Yuan Jinguang is claimed to have enlisted the help of his brother-in-law, Zhang.

Zhang is accused of skinning the panda.

Yuan gave the skin to go-between Gao Jianyun, but the poachers were reported to police by other villagers.

He, Yuan and Gao were arrested, but police could not find Zhang.

Gao was sentenced to death with a reprieve, while He and Yuan spent more than eight years in jail.

Zhang was apprehended recently, prosecutors said.
