Villager gets punished for hunting sparrows
A farmer in Henan Province was sentenced to a six-month detention with a one-year reprieve on Tuesday for illegally hunting sparrows, Xinhua reported today.
Sun Liusheng, a 51-year-old villager in Quliang Town, Xinmi City, began catching sparrows with nets this year to sell for money. Police caught him in the act on March 6 after receiving a report from others and seized his hunting tools and 127 sparrows he already netted.
Realizing it is a crime to hunt sparrows, Sun helped the police to free the birds.
Sparrow has been listed as one of the wild animals under government protection after the country's revised animal protection law went into effect in August 2000. However, many people still risk being punished to hunt sparrows as a delicacy.
