Villager protesting sand mining killed by a loader
A villager in northwest China's Gansu Province was crushed to death by a quarry loader when he tried to stop it because the quarry polluted farmland, damaged a local road and posted dangers to local residents, today's Lanzhou Morning Post reported.
The 76-year-old villager in Tongwei County went to the sand quarry on June 26 to stop the loader, but the driver ignored him and kept moving. Guo fell under the loader and died on the spot, a witness told to paper.
A villager said the quarry increased its output every year and several big pits appeared on the riverbed and damaged a road along the river. They did not stop but kept expanding their sandpits.
Local authorities had shut down the quarry for illegal operation before, but it managed to obtain a business license three months ago, the paper said.
Police investigation into the case is still ongoing.
