Villagers accuse police of stalling in rape cases
VILLAGERS in central China accused police of being dilatory in solving rape cases that have terrified the area for years, after two naked teenage girls were rescued from a basement dungeon.
Police in Wuhan City, capital of Hubei Province, refused to comment on the allegations, Beijing News reported yesterday.
They rescued two girls, aged 19 and 16, from a basement dungeon in Shengyin Village one week after they arrested suspect Zeng Xiangbao for an unrelated rape case.
The girls could have starved to death or drowned as rain water constantly flowed into the 2.5-meter-deep basement, which was essentially a pit dug by Zeng.
A doctor in a community hospital nearby said many rapes and robberies occurred near the village. Police said they would increase patrols on main streets.
A villager said the girls had to go to the toilet right beside the tap water and that they lived in fetid water. The two girls were still under police protection and family visits were not allowed.
A group of people sealed off Zeng's house yesterday. They claimed that they were Zeng's relatives, but villagers said they had never met these people.
The same group attempted to interrupt villagers from speaking to the media.
