Villagers demand light sentence for abused woman who killed husband

HUNDREDS of villagers in northern Hebei Province have signed a petition calling for a light sentence for a woman who killed her husband after suffering domestic violence over a prolonged period.
The 235 villagers in Nanchai Village said the wife, Gao Rongzhai, was often beaten up by her brutal husband, Wang Zhanchao. He had even scalded her with boiling oil and smashed into her with a motorcycle, according to their children, Yaozhao Metropolis Daily reported today.
Her resentment against her husband finally exploded into bloodshed on December 31, 2010, after they had quarreled over family disputes and Wang had abused and threatened to kill her.
At night, an outraged Gao struck Wang's head several times with an iron pole while he was sleeping. Wang succumbed to his wounds in a local hospital after undergoing emergency treatment, Xingtai City People's Procuratorate said.
The Procuratorate has suggested that the court impose a light sentence, because Gao handed herself over to police after she had ended her unbearable marriage with violence, the report said.
